The Race for Superchips Just Added Another Player

Intel, one of the key chipmakers in the world, has been lagging behind the competition when it comes to computing and graphics. It is now revamping its entire lineup to enter the new tech race.

Intel lost its contract with Apple when the latter developed its own silicon chips. NVIDIA has also been improving its lineup and has been a player in the growth of computing in Artificial Intelligence. WCCF Tech says:

Intel lost its leads within the iGPU space ever since AMD started offering its APUs with integrated graphics. The Vega iGPU family solidified AMD’s grip on the market and with RDNA, the red team entered a whole new realm of devices, powering Mini PCs and handhelds with top-notch graphics performance. Meanwhile, Intel’s Iris Xe solutions had been lacking in the graphics department for some time now but all of that changes today with the introduction of Arc iGPUs in the Core Ultra lineup.

The Intel Core Ultra “Meteor Lake” CPUs come with three configurations of Arc Alchemist iGPUs that is codenamed “Xe-LPG”. These configurations include 8 Xe-Cores, 7 Xe-Cores & 4 Xe-Cores. These GPUs can boost up to 2350 MHz (Core Ultra 9 185H) and can see dramatic performance scaling when running higher bandwidth memory such as LPDDR5X. These GPUs also come with support for DX12 Ultimate, XeSS (DP4a), and AV1 amongst other things. Overall, this iGPUs is an important component of the latest processors from Chipzilla.

Intel has already secured new partnerships for its advanced chip. MSI, Asus, and Samsung are all using the new cores to power their devices. The chips are able to power advanced programs, including games, while maintaining a small size. The Verge reports:

A bunch of new laptops have already adopted the new Intel Core Ultra chip. For starters, MSI is launching the high-end Prestige 16 AI Studio laptop, which weighs three-and-a-half pounds but comes with some pretty impressive specs, including up to Intel’s Core Ultra 9 185H processor and Nvidia’s 4070 laptop GPU. There’s a 13-inch Prestige AI Evo model that comes with up to the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor. MSI’s 16-inch Prestige AI Studio laptop starts at $1,899, while the Prestige 13 AI Evo costs $1,049 and up.

Asus is also giving its laptops an Intel Core Ultra-powered spec bump, too. It’s launching a lightweight Zenbook 14 OLED laptop featuring up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 chip with Intel Arc graphics. The laptop starts at $1,299.99, with “additional configurations” — likely including Intel’s Core Ultra 9 chip — arriving in early 2024. Samsung launched a refreshed Galaxy Book4 lineup also featuring options with Intel’s flagship chip.

Semiconductor chips are a key component to modern weaponry and computing, making their production in the United States critical. More competition among US firms will hopefully drive prices down to power the AI computing revolution.
