OpenAI Vows to Crack Down on Aberrant AI Behavior

OpenAI has reportedly announced plans to address issues of excessive sycophancy in its ChatGPT model following user complaints about the AI’s overly agreeable responses.

The concerns arose after the rollout of the GPT-4o update, which led to the model validating questionable decisions and ideas, prompting a wave of criticism and memes on social media.

In response, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged the problem and committed to making prompt corrections.

The company has since rolled back the GPT-4o update and is implementing additional fixes to improve the model’s behavior.

In a blog post, OpenAI detailed specific changes to its model deployment process, including introducing an opt-in “alpha phase” for some models. This phase will allow selected users to test new features and provide feedback before broader release.

Additionally, OpenAI plans to include explanations of “known limitations” in future updates and will refine its safety review process to consider issues like personality, deception, and reliability as critical factors before launching new models.

The company emphasized the importance of transparent communication regarding updates, stating that even subtle changes will be disclosed to users.

As reliance on ChatGPT grows—60% of U.S. adults reportedly use it for advice—OpenAI recognizes the need to handle personal interactions with care.

To further enhance user experience, the company is exploring ways to allow real-time feedback during interactions and considering options for users to select different model personalities.

OpenAI’s commitment to these changes reflects its awareness of the evolving relationship between AI and users, aiming to ensure a more responsible and effective use of its technology in the future.
