Chinese App Strikes Back

TikTok is asking a federal judge to block Montana’s ban, according to Billboard.

Montana legislated the ban against TikTok based on the analysis of FBI and other government agencies. TikTok and other Chinese apps are collecting high amount of private data, which can be accessed by the Chinese Communist Party upon request.

Democrats and Republicans have allied to pass bipartisan legislation banning the use of the app on government devices. Many states have already passed similar bans, but have stopped short of preventing private citizens to access the app.

Montana’s ban is the first targeting a whole state in the country, which makes the a potential court challenge precedent making. Few states have passed similar laws totally banning websites, though a wider backlash against obscene content is already in the works in many conservative states.

The evolving changes in information, sourcing, platforms, and provenance all challenge the current understanding of the First Amendment.
