Palantir, the software firm co-founded by Peter Thiel, is reportedly collaborating with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on an initiative to create a “mega API” aimed at streamlining access to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) records.
Over the past three days, representatives from DOGE, Palantir, and numerous IRS engineers have been working together at a hackathon event to build a unified API layer over all IRS databases.
The proposed API would facilitate data exchange, potentially migrating IRS information—including taxpayer names, addresses, Social Security numbers, tax returns, and employment details—into the cloud.
This system could allow for comparisons of IRS data with datasets from other government agencies.
If completed, Palantir’s Foundry software is intended to serve as the central hub for IRS systems.
Foundry is designed to organize and analyze data, generating APIs and machine learning models to enhance data querying capabilities.
However, the specifics of user access to this sensitive information remain unclear.
The project is spearheaded by Sam Corcos, a former SpaceX engineer, who aims to enhance the efficiency of IRS systems. Corcos has indicated plans to halt existing modernization contracts and has reportedly cut around $1.5 billion from the IRS’s modernization budget to streamline processes.
The initiative aligns with a recent executive order from President Trump, which aims to eliminate government “information silos” to combat fraud and improve efficiency.
However, this centralization could expose sensitive personal data to risks.
The Government Accountability Office is currently investigating DOGE’s handling of data security across multiple government departments, raising concerns over privacy implications.
