Here’s What To Expect From Your New iPhone Software Update

Apple’s fall event came and went. The iPhone accounts for 47% of Apple’s revenue, making the event particularly important for Apple’s yearly projections.

The yearly release of the new iPhone comes paired with a software update. While not everyone will be upgrading hardware, most iPhone users will be able to enjoy the new features of iOS17. CNET explains when each software update will be released:

Apple will release iOS 17 on Monday. It brings improvements and new features to compatible iPhones, like StandBy mode and personalized Messages stickers. Read what our CNET expert thinks of the new iOS after testing it for the last two months, and which iPhone models it will work on.

When the new software is available, you can download it by going into Settings > General > Software Updates.

Among the features are contact sharing abilities, better voicemail abilities, offline maps, and journaling. Forbes goes over some of these features:

If, like me, you receive lots of calls you need to screen, this new iOS 17 feature will be a godsend. It works like this: Someone calls and leaves a voicemail. While they are speaking, their message appears on your iPhone as a live transcript. During that time, you can pick up the call, too. Pretty cool, huh?

AirDrop is pretty useful for exchanging large data files, and the new iOS 17 feature NameDrop aims to do the same but for contact details. NameDrop is great for when you meet someone—such as a date or business contact—and you want to exchange details securely and privately. The process looks seamless, with videos of the feature in action showing exactly how it works.

The iOS 17 update is available to all iPhones more recent than the iPhone X, which was released in 2017. WatchOS 10 will be available for all watches supporting WatchOS 9. Most Macs released in 2017 will also lose support. First generation iPad Pros and 5th generation iPads are also dropped.
