Apple’s Flagship Event is Today

Apple’s flagship event is here. Named “Wonderlust” in 2023, the fall event is Apple’s most important for the year. Among key products released are software updates across all devices, the iPhone 15 and Watch Series 9 among others.

The event follows Apple’s June event, where software updates were previously announced. One of the key security features is the ability for third party passkey use. CNET reports:

Today is Apple’s Wonderlust event, and we expect to see the rumored iPhone 15 and new Apple Watches announced. You can watch Apple’s Wonderlust event stream starting at 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m. EDT. This will be the first event since Apple unveiled the Vision Pro at WWDC earlier this summer. The annual fall iPhone event has become a cultural touch point heralding the end of summer, right up there with pumpkin spice.

For months, a seemingly endless flow of iPhone 15 rumors have circulated online. Some hint at a rather straightforward round of year-over-year upgrades, while others point to the possibility of a rebranded larger Pro model called the iPhone 15 Ultra. As the anticipation builds, here’s everything you can expect from today’s Apple’s fall event.

The key iPhone feature is set to be the new USB-C charging port. Not only does this simplify charging compatibilities between phones, but it also allows for faster data transfers over cable. This is particularly important for professionals who use their iPhones as cameras. Tech Crunch continues:

The clear marquee announcement this time out. What’s perhaps most interesting about the iPhone 15 is that Apple had its hand forced here. It’s not like anyone in the big glass spaceship was champing at the bit to adopt USB-C (or Thunderbolt 3 or whatever you want to call it). You can thank EU regulators for that one. Last year, the European Parliament voted to standardize ports across devices.

Now, technically, those regulators gave manufacturers until the end of 2024 to implement the tech across devices, but all signs point to Apple pulling off the Band-Aid for the iPhone 15. Among other things, more regional governing bodies are poised to follow the EU’s lead here for consumer advocacy and e-waste related reasons.

This latest change will make iPhones closer to Androids in a good way. It will also enable users to take advantage of the many USB-C accessories already on the market.
