Apple Joins the AI Race

Apple has developed its own Artificial Intelligence to compete with other major players, CNET reports.

The language, sometimes called “Apple GPT” or “Ajax”, has been used internally by Apple’s staff. This comes as all of Apple’s major competitors already have an AI language program: Chat GPT (OpenAI), Llama 2 (Meta), and Bard (Google). Microsoft is also teaming up with other companies to strengthen its own AI.

The report also follows Meta launching the second generation of its large language model, Llama 2, this week, making it free commercially in a partnership with Microsoft. Qualcomm is also working with Meta to make Llama 2 AI implementations available on phones and PCs starting next year.

How Apple’s AI will integrate with its Siri voice assistant and products is unclear. Siri continues to lag behind Google’s Voice Assistant and Alexa, which could also impact Apple GPT.

Apple is relatively well positioned to improve its language. It will most likely become a front and center feature for future iPhone released, and will be able to receive data from a wide variety of sources. Apple GPT will most likely face questions of privacy, though Apple’s track record through its Advanced Data Protection will most likely give consumers more peace of mind.
