Apple and Google Team Up To Take On This Threat

Apple and Google have joined forces to tackle the threat of stalking, MacWorld reports. Both companies will be working on a common framework to prevent the misuse of bluetooth trackers such as AirTags.

Bluetooth trackers have seen huge consumer enthusiasm, being used to find lost keys, wallets, and even cars. Being able to track objects also means that these electronics can be used to track humans unknowingly, benefiting stalkers.

Apple AirTags currently have a feature where iPhone users can detect unknown AirTags that have been following them. iPhone users can then disable the tracker to prevent further stalking. A minor downside is that users need to alert the authorities immediately in case an item is stolen, as the thief will be able to disable it within an hour or so.

A joint framework for trackers will enable both iPhone and Android users to detect bluetooth trackers, including those from other companies such as Tile or Chipolo. The development model will follow that of Matter, which enabled multiple smart home companies such as Google, Apple, and Amazon to have interoperable devices.

The two major companies have previously collaborated on joint solutions where dividing people by phone operating system would make little sense. For instance, they both developed COVID contact tracing applications together in 2020. Apple and Google still have not developed native messaging applications beyond SMS. Apple continues to develop its proprietary iMessage while Google tries to push the former to adopt RCS.
