McDonald’s has taken steps to revitalize its image as an affordable place for most people to eat. As the price of combo meals with large sandwiches has continued to rise, consumers have been going to regular restaurants or eating at home.
McDonalds will be releasing a $5 Meal Deal, with a small fry, McDouble or McChicken, nuggets, and small drink. Users will only be able to get this deal by using the phone app. The NY Post says:
As the prices of fast food rise, McDonald’s, which prides itself on value, is launching its hotly anticipated $5 Meal Deal next week, as the chain begins offering more ways to save exclusively for app users.
Starting June 25, patrons can score a meal for just $5 under the Golden Arches, with their choice of a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, a small fry, four-piece nugget and a small fountain beverage at select locations.
The $5 price point seems to be a direct rebuttal to Wendy’s own, which features the same 4 elements in the deal. It is also cheap enough that Americans will consider it as a quick eat rather than a serious decision. CNN continues:
The arrival of the McDonald’s meal deal comes at a time when the company is battling the perception that it has become too expensive. That caused Erlinger to put out a rare open letter denouncing “viral social posts and poorly sourced reports that McDonald’s has raised prices significantly beyond inflationary rates.”
“The average price of a Big Mac in the US was $4.39 in 2019,” he wrote. “Despite a global pandemic and historic rises in supply chain costs, wages and other inflationary pressures in the years that followed, the average cost is now $5.29. That’s an increase of 21% (not 100%).”
The calorie count on that deal is still expected to be in the 800s, which is roughly what is recommended for most people. Wether this price point is sustainable for McDonalds or not is unknown, though it has to bring its practices in line with other competitors.
