Apple has revealed its September update to its operating systems. Core to this is the introduction of “Apple Intelligence”, Apple’s new AI service. Notably, it will be used as a supercharged Siri, making the voice-command service more intuitive.
Apple was notable for falling behind its major competitors in the field of AI. To compensate, it will be essentially embedding OpenAI’s ChatGPT in its services. This has caused some pushback from the likes of Elon Musk.
If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation.

The Verge reports:
At WWDC, Apple is rumored to infuse its operating systems with AI — with Siri being the focal point. According to Bloomberg, Apple has reworked Siri using large language models to help it better understand what users want and better respond to their queries. The new version of Siri will reportedly be able to take actions for you inside of Apple’s own apps, potentially making the assistant far more capable than it is today.
Apple is apparently going to brand the AI features as “Apple Intelligence” and build them in throughout its apps, Bloomberg reports. Other AI features might include AI summaries of messages and webpages and real-time transcriptions in Notes and Voice Memos, according to Apple Insider. A custom emoji generator is in the cards, and the Photos app will reportedly let you use AI to remove objects and people from images.
In addition, Apple also announced a series of changes for customizing the iPhone’s homepage. It will also allow to hide and lock apps, in addition to interoperability with Android texting. CNET says:
We’ll probably see a range of updates across Apple’s operating systems, including relatively minor tweaks that could still feel like a big deal for users. For instance, reports suggest that with the arrival of iOS 18, iPhone users will be able to place app icons wherever they want on their Home Screen, according to MacRumors. That means you could have gaps or empty rows between icons, offering a bit more flexibility (and a feature that has long existed on Android).
Apple has already announced some accessibility-related updatesacross iOS, iPadOS and VisionOS that are slated for release later this year, like Eye Tracking on iPad and iPhone, and Live Captions on VisionOS. So we may hear more about those updates and get an exact timeline of their availability.
The full list of Apple’s changes for the iPhone can be found here. Apple’s other Operating Systems for iPads, Macs, Watches and other devices will also be released around the same time.
