Government Takes Action on AI

The US Government is set to release an executive order on Artificial Intelligence soon. It is set to regulate which AI services the government can purchase for its own use.

However, the order will also expand immigration of skilled technological labor, putting additional pressure on American workers’s salaries. Engadget reports:

The Biden Administration is reportedly set to unveil a broad executive order on artificial intelligence next week. According to The Washington Post, the White House’s “sweeping order” would use the federal government’s purchasing power to enforce requirements on AI models before government agencies can use them. The order is reportedly scheduled for Monday, October 30, two days before an international AI Safety Summit in the UK.

The order will allegedly require advanced AI models to undergo a series of assessments before federal agencies can adopt them. In addition, it would ease immigration for highly skilled workers, which was heavily restrictedduring the Trump administration. Federal agencies, including the Defense Department, Energy Department and intelligence branches, would also have to assess how they might incorporate AI into their work. The report notes that the analyses would emphasize strengthening the nation’s cyber defenses.

The most immediate use of AI would be for law enforcement and national security reasons. The Wall Street Journal says:

One person briefed on the order said it is expected to use the National Institute of Standards and Technology to strengthen industry benchmarks around testing and evaluating AI systems. The administration also is expected to use the order to tighten and formalize the government’s oversight of AI commitments that major U.S. tech companies made in July, particularly around national security, though some observers question the extent of the government’s enforcement powers absent new authority from Congress.

A significant focus of the order will be on development of AI as a national security tool.

AI will be a key element in warfare and the economy, making it vital to American security. Privacy concerns are still major factors in the realm of AI.
