Ray-Ban is the eyewear company known for its iconic models such as Aviator glasses, often sported by President Biden. Following a previous venture with Meta, the company is working on a new tech product.
The Ray-Ban Stories glasses were mildly successful, where they enabled users to manage some Meta features, such as photo and video syncing. The new product, which would overhaul the Stories, is codenamed Supernova. Android Central reports:
Smart glasses have been at a bit of a standstill for some time now. While the category started out with lots of excitement, much of those feelings seemed to have fizzled out as we waited for technology to catch up. For folks still looking for a great pair of smart glasses, Meta and Ray-Ban seem to be making a proper follow-up to its first product, Ray-Ban Stories.
This new pair of smart glasses, codenamed Supernova, was leaked by NyaVR on Threads when they were examining code in the Facebook View app. Existing Ray-Ban Stories glasses use the Facebook View app — which looks to be renamed Meta View — to sync photos, video, and audio to and from the glasses.
The Supernova is not meant to compete with Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset. Its features and computing capacity are lesser, but are more portable and can be used on the go. WCCFTech details:
It appears that the Ray-Ban Stories 2 could even sport a slimmer charging case that looks a lot better than the last one. The new smart cases will also have an option to start live streaming on Facebook, something that a lot of similar devices still don’t possess.
It is worth noting that based on the information that we have right now, the Ray-Ban Stories 2 do not appear to be AR glasses. They do act as full-fledged smart glasses with a lot of features packed into them, and that certainly is a good thing because you have something on your hands that can actually work wonders for various functions even if you don’t want to use them as a pair of smart glasses, they still look wicked-cool if you wear them as just a pair of sunglasses.
Meta lags behind competitors Apple and Microsoft in terms of full-suite services, such as email and operating systems. It is still able to leverage its prominence in social media networking, which could give it an edge in cornering the currently niche market of computing glasses.
