AI Goes Rogue

Snapchat’s Artificial Intelligence stopped responding to users’ inputs. Instead, it began acting on its own.

Snapchat recently rolled out an artificial intelligence component. The core purpose of the feature was to help users find local recommendations, tying Snapchat’s picture taking with mapping local businesses. Tech Crunch reports:

Snapchat’s My AI feature, an in-app AI chatbot launched earlier this year with its fair share of controversy, briefly appeared to have a mind of its own. On Tuesday, the AI posted its own Story to the app and then stopped responding to users’ messages, which some Snapchat users found disconcerting.

“My Snapchat AI posted a random 1 second story and isn’t replying to me AND IM FREAKED OUT,” posted one user, @RyanJKrul on X (formerly Twitter).

Snapchat admitted to the error and mentioned the problem was now fixed. Mashable continues:

When reached for comment, a Snap spokesperson confirmed that My AI had experienced an outage, but that it had since been resolved.

The issue was not entirely resolved immediately, as My AI temporarily continued to respond to at least some users’ text messages with: “Hey, I’m a bit busy at the moment. Can we catch up later? 😊” However others soon reported that the My AI chatbot was back online, allowing them to question it about its strange Story.

As AI is sweeping throughout apps and services, users will see more and more glitches. Consumers will have to decide whether AI is proving more useful than potentially dangerous.
