LG, one of the top electronics company, is releasing a new kind of TV.
The StandByMe is a flatscreen TV that lives in a suitcase. It makes it easy to transport and setup, and doesn’t need a power source to function. CNET explains:
The StanbyMe Go is a display and entertainment center packed into a svelte suitcase that you can take with you. The 27-inch, 1080p resolution LED screen is attached to a swivel, so you can raise the screen up, prop it at an angle, put it in table mode and then pack it up again.
The 20-watt speaker it comes with adapts to the screen’s rotation and provides surround sound with Dolby Atmos, according to LG, along with Dolby Vision technology. There are compartments inside the case to hold its accessories, and a battery that’s already built-in. In terms of battery life, there’s about three hours of viewing time between charges.
LG’s TV comes with standard streaming apps, such as Netflix, Disney +, and Amazon Prime. Internet connectivity to stream on the TV would require a hotspot plan on cell phones. The Verge goes on:
Since this is technically a TV — a very strange TV, but a TV nonetheless — it runs LG’s webOS software, so you get the full array of streaming apps you’d expect. You can control it via the touchscreen, an included remote (that has its own spot in the suitcase), or through voice controls.
LG says the StanbyME Go also “supports AirPlay and screen mirroring compatible with iOS and Android devices, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.” But I’d imagine that if you’re not hauling it to your local coffee shop or the deck, you’ll be relying on your phone’s hotspot connection a whole lot to keep the TV shows and movies going.
iPads and tablets have filled the role of on the go entertainment devices, especially for car trips. This suitcase tv, however, enables collective entertainment experiences out of the house.
