Never Back Down, a Ron DeSantis Super-PAC, has broken new ground by using an AI generated voice in a campaign video, Politico reports.
The audio that the ad generated with AI, however, is that of Donald Trump. Watch here:
The use of AI to generate the voice of an opponent opens the door to ethical concerns. The text read in Trump’s generated voice is his, having been posted on his Truth Social account.
As attacks between candidates continue to ramp up, other campaigns may be tempted to push the boundaries and assign unpopular statements in the voice of their opponents. “DeepFake” videos have already been used in political contests, but fake voices are harder to decipher and could mislead voters.
Ron DeSantis and his supporters have been on the offensive against Donald Trump, targeting the former President for his criticism of the very popular conservative governor, Kim Reynolds. Reynolds has refused to endorse any candidate, wanting her state to continue its tradition of launching the contest for the presidency.
It is worth noting that for years where a Republican was not the incumbent, the winner of the Iowa Caucus has not received the party’s nomination since 2000. Prior to that, only Bob Dole in 1996 secured the state and went on to win the nomination. Should Trump win the state, however, his chances of winning the nomination would skyrocket as his lead on his opponents is commanding.
