The Federal Communications Commission has set its sights on combatting SIM-swapping, the Verge reports.
SIM swapping is a major threat to digital security. Most online services and communications tools rely on a phone number, which a SIM swapping attack can compromise.
Two factor authentication still mostly use SMS codes, which are very vulnerable to SIM-swapping. Two factor authentication is more secure when using passkeys and time based authentication support.
A major cases of SIM-swapping occurred in 2019, when Jack Dorsey’s Twitter account was hacked. Thousands of Tracfone customers’ phone numbers were used for port-fraud calls.
Carriers would be required to more easily secure authentication between customers and their phone numbers.
