Meta is now reportedly testing a new feature on Instagram that generates AI-based comments to enhance user interaction. Observed by social media user Jonah Manzano, the feature, labeled “Write with Meta AI,” provides users with AI-generated suggestions for comments on posts.
When users access the feature, they will notice a pencil icon next to the text bar under a post. Tapping this icon allows them to receive comment suggestions based on the content of the photo.
For example, if a user is commenting on a picture of someone smiling with a thumbs-up at home, the AI might suggest comments like “Cute living room setup,” “Love the cozy atmosphere,” or “Great photo shoot location.”
Should users find the initial suggestions unsatisfactory, they have the option to refresh and receive new recommendations.
A Meta spokesperson confirmed the ongoing testing, stating that the company regularly experiments with new features across its apps to enhance user experience in areas like comments, feeds, groups, and searches.
While the introduction of AI-generated comments aims to foster engagement, it might not sit well with all users.
Many Instagram users value authentic comments from friends over AI-generated responses, yearning for a return to the platform’s more genuine roots.
The availability of this test feature has not been disclosed, but Meta has previously experimented with AI-generated comments on Facebook.
As with any test, it remains uncertain when or if the feature will be widely implemented. Users have expressed concerns that the automation of comments could diminish the authenticity of interactions, adding to the ongoing debate about the role of AI in social media platforms.
