Republican Congressman Jim Jordan, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, has reportedly reached out to 16 major tech companies, including Google and OpenAI, inquiring about any communications with the Biden administration that may indicate efforts to censor artificial intelligence (AI) products.
His letters suggest that the former president might have “coerced or colluded” with these firms to suppress lawful speech.
This inquiry reflects a broader conservative push against perceived censorship in the tech industry, particularly regarding AI.
Jordan previously led investigations into alleged collusion between the Biden administration and social media platforms to silence conservative voices.
Now, he is focusing on AI companies, seeking transparency on their communications with the government.
In his letters, Jordan referenced a report from his committee that claims to have uncovered the Biden-Harris administration’s attempts to control AI to limit free speech.
Among the companies he contacted are Adobe, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, with a deadline of March 27 to respond.
Interestingly, Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, was notably absent from Jordan’s list, possibly due to Musk’s close ties with Trump and his vocal stance on AI censorship issues.
The inquiry comes amid increasing scrutiny from conservative lawmakers regarding AI’s role in moderating political content. In response, several tech companies have adjusted their AI models to handle politically sensitive questions differently.
OpenAI, for instance, announced changes aimed at ensuring its models represent diverse perspectives, while Anthropic’s latest model is designed to provide more nuanced answers on controversial topics.
As the investigation unfolds, it underscores the ongoing tension between government oversight and the tech industry’s approach to content moderation, especially in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
